Tastemaker is a social app for tracking, rating, and discovering movies, television, and books, made by Tastemaker App, Inc. in New York, NY. This policy explains what information the Tastemaker mobile app and tastemakerclub.com collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Our founder is our privacy officer and is responsible for how Tastemaker handles personal information. Privacy questions and requests go to the same address.
Account information. You create an account with a phone number, with Sign in with Apple, or with Sign in with Google. We never ask you to create a password and we do not store one. If you sign in by phone, we store a one-way hashed version of your number so we can help you find friends who are already on Tastemaker; if you sign in with Apple or Google, we store the email address that provider gives us.
Profile information. Your username, and optionally a profile photo, a short bio, links, and a city.
What you do in the app. Ratings, reviews, comments, the people you follow, the titles you track as watching or reading, and the lists you build. Ratings and reviews are visible to other people on Tastemaker.
Imported history. If you choose to import your history from another service such as Letterboxd, TV Time, or Goodreads, we read the export file you provide and create the corresponding ratings on your account.
Device and usage information. Device type, operating system, app version, and basic analytics about how the app is used, so we can find bugs and understand which features matter.
Notifications. If you turn on push notifications, we store a device token so we can send them.
Contacts. Only if you explicitly allow it. When you do, the app scrambles each phone number in your address book into a hash and sends those hashes to our servers, along with the name you have saved for that contact. We use them to show you which of your contacts are already on Tastemaker, and to let you invite the ones who are not. We keep the names so we can tell you when someone you know joins. We never receive the phone numbers themselves, and we never read your contacts' email addresses or photos. A hash is scrambled, and it is still information about a real person, so we treat it as personal information. You can turn contacts access off at any time in your device settings, and you can email us to have what we hold about your contacts deleted.
On tastemakerclub.com. The website uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this.
When you choose Sign in with Google, Google asks your permission and then gives us your name, email address, and profile picture. We use them only to create and identify your Tastemaker account, to fill in your profile so you do not have to type it again, and to contact you about your account.
We do not use Google user data for advertising. We do not sell it, rent it, or transfer it to anyone except the service providers listed below, who process it on our behalf so that Tastemaker can run. We do not use it to build advertising profiles or for any purpose unrelated to running the app. Our use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
You can revoke Tastemaker's access at any time from your Google Account permissions page. Deleting your Tastemaker account deletes the data we received from Google.
To run the app and keep your account working; to show your ratings and reviews to the people who follow you; to recommend titles and people based on your taste; to send you notifications you have asked for; to answer your support questions; and to find and fix problems.
We share information with the companies that make the app work, and only so they can provide their service to us:
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or if Tastemaker is ever involved in a merger or acquisition — in which case this policy continues to apply to the information already collected.
Our servers and the service providers listed above are in the United States. If you use Tastemaker from outside the US, including from Canada, your information is transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where courts and authorities may be able to access it under US law.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not show advertising in Tastemaker, and we do not let anyone pay to influence what you see.
You can edit your profile at any time in the app. You can turn notifications and contacts access on or off from your device settings. You can delete your account entirely from Settings in the app, which removes your account, your ratings and reviews, and your sign-in identity. You can also email us to ask what we hold about you, or to ask us to correct or delete it.
You can withdraw your consent at any time by turning off the relevant permission or by deleting your account. Some features need certain information to work, so withdrawing consent may mean you can no longer use them.
If you live in Canada, you can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If you live in Quebec, you can complain to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec. We would like the chance to help first, but you don't need to contact us before going to them.
We keep your information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account we delete it, except where we are required to keep something to meet a legal obligation. Backups are cleared on a rolling basis.
Information is sent over encrypted connections and stored with reputable providers. We take reasonable steps to protect it, though no service can promise perfect security.
Tastemaker is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will remove it.
If you live in Quebec and are under 14, you need a parent's or guardian's consent to use Tastemaker.
We will update this page when our practices change, and we will change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app.
